Saint Lucy, attributed to Carlo Dolci (1616-1687).

Oil on canvas, 51cm by 38cm.

Carlo Dolci was mainly active in Florence, where he was born. His paintings were usually small-scale sacred subjects which he often repeated.

His technique was unsuited to fresco painting.

The painting was purchased by John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700), whilst on the Grand Tour.

It is recorded in the 1688 Burghley Inventory: ‘My Lady’s Clossett….1 St Lucy in an Ebony fframe—–by Carlo Dolci.’
