William Cavendish, 4th Earl and Ist Duke of Devonshire, as a young boy, by John Hoskins, signed with initials and dated 1644.

Half-length holding a puppy, with red hair, wearing a lace cap and a blue gown with white facings, a plinth to dexter with landscape and distant castle beyond, oval 8.5cm, 8.9cm high, 7.7cm high, 1.5cm deep, rectangular dark-stained fruitwood veneer frame.

Provenance: Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire, nee Cecil, her will, proved 13th November 1690 (‘A picture of the present Earle of Devonshire when a Child by Hoskins’), by whom given to her daughter, Anne, Countess of Exeter; Thence by descent.
