Portrayed here whilst still Lord Burghley, he inherited the title as 5th Marquess on the untimely, and unexpected, death of his father in 1898.
He held it until his own death in 1956, his tenure spanning the entire first half of the 20th Century.
This was an often difficult time, encompassing two World Wars and witnessing the decline of agricultural incomes.
Throughout this time, he husbanded the Estate, its farms and properties with great care and wisdom.
He became a Knight of the Garter in 1937.
