William, 5th Marquess of Exeter, KG, by Luigi Burnier, signed and dated 1889.

William, 5th Marquess inherited the title on the untimely, and unexpected, death of his father in 1898. He held it until his own death in 1956, his tenure spanning the entire first half of the 20th Century, an often difficult time which encompassed two World Wars and witnessed the decline of agricultural incomes. Throughout this time, he husbanded the Estate, its farms and properties with great care and wisdom. He became a Knight of the Garter in 1937.
