When the opportunity arose in 1961, Lord Burghley, who had by then become 6th Marquess of Exeter, was instrumental in bringing a three-day event to Burghley Park.
Now known internationally as the Burghley Horse Trials, it is a five star event, one of seven worldwide.
Burghley has been the venue for six European Championships and two World Championships.
This prestigious and highly successful event celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2011.
