Venus and Cupids, by Giacinto Gimignani (1606-1681).

Oil on canvas, 72.5cm by 58.5cm. Signed l.l.: Hyacin G…..

The painting appears in the 1763 Burghley Inventory, in the hand of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793): ‘the dressing room … Venus & Cupids. By Nic Possen.’

Gimignani was born in Pistoia, but spent most of his working life in Rome, where he is said to have worked for some time under Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665), the leading painter of the classical French Baroque style.
