Two Mughal rock crystal buttons, 17th Century.

The tiny 2cm buttons are mounted in gold and set with rubies and emeralds.

They are all that remain of the ‘six Christall Buttons sett with Rubies and Emrods Enamel’d on the Back side,’ which appear in the 1690 Devonshire Schedule listed under the heading: ‘Cornelian Coralls Garnetts and other Stones.’

The Schedule is an inventory recording a huge bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689), to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703).

It encompassed the entire contents of her suite of private apartments at Chatsworth.
