Two Fighting Cocks, Follower of Melchior d’Hondecoeter (1636-1695).

Oil on canvas, 98cm x 135cm.

From early in his career the Dutch artist Melchior d’Hondecoeter specialised in painting birds.

These were usually, though not exclusively, either exotic or game birds and often depicted in a parkland setting.

He influenced, or was followed by, several other artists.

The painting is after the original in the collection of Lord Burton. It came to Burghley via inheritance.
