The story of Tobias and the Angel is drawn from the Book of Tobit, a book of scripture which is part of the Catholic and Orthodox biblical canon.
Tavella was born in Milan, but was active mainly in Genoa, where he helped to decorate the Palazzo Franchi.
He also worked for some time as a landscape artist.
