The West View of Burghley House; A Perspective View of The Inner Court of Burghley House and The South West View of Burghley House, by John Haynes.

Pen and grey ink and grey washes; each signed inscribed and dated 1755 and each 49.5cm by 73.7cm.

In 1755 John Haynes, a surveyor from York, was employed by Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) to make a detailed record of various aspects of Burghley, as it then was.

The earl had inherited the title on his father’s death the previous year and intended making some alterations and improvements to the property.
