The Virgin and Child, by Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato (1609-1685), after Raphael (1483-1520).

Oil on canvas, unlined, 43cm by 34.5cm.

Sassoferrato’s work was derived mainly from Raphael’s compositions and was enormously popular with 18th and 19th Century Grand Tourists.

This is one of two paintings by the artist purchased for Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), through his agent in Rome, James Byres.

A receipt for £20 for this painting is dated Rome, 16 May 1769. See PIC444.
