Sassoferrato’s work was derived mainly from Raphael’s compositions and was enormously popular with 18th and 19th Century Grand Tourists.
This is one of two paintings by the artist purchased for Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), through his agent in Rome, James Byres.
