The Tribute Money, after Matthias Stomer (c1600-after1652).

Paper laid on panel, 26cm by 34cm.

The story of the tribute money comes from the Gospel of St. Matthew, in which Christ instructs Peter to remove a coin from the mouth of a fish in order to pay a temple tax.

Matthias Stomer was born in the Utrecht area of Holland. However, he spent most of his life in Italy, where from about 1615, he studied in Rome with Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656).

His mainly religious subjects were also much influenced by the work of Caravaggio (1571-1610).
