The Three Elements, Manner of Francesco Albani (1578-1660).

On the reverse, a note in the distinctive hand of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) records: ‘From Signor Vitturi at Venice, Vicino a St. Vitale.’

Albani, born in Bologna, studied with the Flemish-born artist Denis Calvaert (1540-1619).

He was active in Bologna before moving to Rome where he became a principal assistant to Annibale Carracci (1560-1609).

He worked on a series of fresco cycles in both private palazzi and religious buildings.
