Lancelot Brown was employed by Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) for a period of twenty three years, during which he transformed the Park and made substantial alterations to the House.
The roof level on the South Front was to be raised; the plan showing the alternative choices of balustrading or crenellation for the new roof line, the former of which was chosen.
