The painting, which was originally in the Colonna Palace in Rome, was previously attributed to Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and bears the words “Nicola Possin Pinxit” on the reverse of the canvas.
Spierincks was a Fleming who spent his working life in Italy.
He painted mainly religious and mythological scenes; his style much influenced by the work of Poussin.
