The sleeping Infant Christ with Angels and the Symbols of the Passion, by Karl Philipp Spierincks (1608-1639).

Oil on canvas, 75cm by 61cm.

The painting, which was originally in the Colonna Palace in Rome, was previously attributed to Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and bears the words “Nicola Possin Pinxit” on the reverse of the canvas.

Spierincks was a Fleming who spent his working life in Italy.

He painted mainly religious and mythological scenes; his style much influenced by the work of Poussin.
