The Seagull and Telemachus, a Shorthorn Family at Burghley, by A.M. Gauci.

A record in the Burghley Archives states: 20th April 1881: A.M.Gaucci of 79 Great Titchfield Street, London, ‘To painting group of five Short Horned animals viz: Telemachus 6th, Telemachus 9th, Sea Gull, Sea Bird and Sea Lark. 12 Guineas.’

These cattle were part of a prize winning herd of dairy shorthorns bred for William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895) on the Home Farm at Burghley.

A.M.Gauci (fl.1848-1880s) was an animal painter and engraver.

He engraved many illustrations of shorthorn cattle for for herd books and other publications.
