Oil on canvas, circular, diameter 72.5cm.
The painting is after The Madonna della Sedia, by Raphael, now in the Uffizi in Florence.
Under an engraving of the painting, Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), recorded that it was: ‘In the Grand Duke of Tuscany’s collection at Florence a copy from this Picture by Mr. Peters is in the collection at Burghley.’
Matthew Peters was a portrait and genre painter who, having been elected to the Royal Academy in 1777, later resigned to become an Anglican clergyman.
He later became chaplain to George IV.
