An original of this painting is in the Capo di Monte Museum in Naples and a replica at Attingham Park, Shrewsbury.

Matthew Peters was a portrait and genre painter who, having been elected to the Royal Academy in 1777, later resigned to become an Anglican clergyman.

He later became chaplain to George IV.
