The Pietà with St. Mary Magdalene and St. John the Evangelist, attributed to Giovanni Remigio (1607-1675), after Van Dyck (1599-1641).

Oil on copper, 45cm by 37cm.

The painting was purchased by John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700) and appears in the 1688 Burghley Inventory: ‘My Ladys Clossett….a Dead Christ on Copper, Ebony frame by Sigr Romigio.’

It is a copy of the painting by Van Dyck in Antwerp.

Remigio, a Fleming, worked closely with Sir Anthony van Dyck and produced many small scale copies of the latter’s paintings, as well as those of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) and others.
