The Pieta with St. Mary Magdalene and St. John the Evangelist, Attributed to Giovanni Remigio (1607-1675), after Van Dyck (1599-1641).

Oil on copper, 45cm by 37cm.

This painting was purchased by the 5th Earl of Exeter and appears in the 1688 Inventory: p. 30: “My Ladys Clossett….a Dead Christ on Copper, Ebony frame by Sigr Romigio.”

Remigio, a Fleming, worked closely with Sir Anthony van Dyck and produced many small scale copies of the latter’s paintings, as well as those of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) and others.
