The Northamptonshire Agricultural Society’s annual Show held at Burghley, September 1875, by Walter Ray Woods, (1823-1902).

Oil on canvas, 90.2cm by 151.1cm. Signed l.l.: Walter Ray Woods/1875.

The cattle in the foreground of the painting are dairy shorthorns and almost certainly members of the prize-winning dairy herd bred for William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895) on the Home Farm at Burghley.

They also appear in PIC777 and PIC775, as well as a series of recently discovered preparatory gouache sketches for the latter, PIC971.
