The North Front of Burghley with intended Alterations, by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (c. 1716-1783).

Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) employed Lancelot Brown to make changes at Burghley shortly after he inherited the title in 1754.

Brown, and others, drew up plans for the proposed changes and he was to work at Burghley for a period of twenty three years, during which time he made alterations to the House and transformed the parkland.
