The Mourning over the dead Christ, attributed to Pietro di Pietri (1663-1716).

Oil on copper, 36cm by 25cm.

Pietro di Pietri assisted in the studio of Carlo Maratta (1625-1713), the leading Roman artist of the time, known mainly for his work in the late Baroque Classical manner.

Maratta was also a well known portrait painter and painted many English Grand Tourists during their visits to Rome, including John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700), though sadly, the whereabouts of the portrait are now unknown.
