This painting is after the original by Correggio which was in the Dresden Gallery and has been either lost or destroyed.
The 1738 Burghley Inventory records: ‘A Piety a woman lying upon a rock, supporting her head with her hand upon the ground, in the other hand a book in w.ch she is reading.’
