The Holy Family, by Ventura Salimbeni, Il Bevilacqua (1568-1613).

Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded frame, 102cm by 79cm.

This painting was purchased by Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) whilst on the Grand Tour and is a replica of a painting in Budapest by Francesco Vanni (1563-1610).

Salimbeni was a half brother of Vanni, with whom he studied under their father Arcangelo Salimbeni in their native Siena.

He worked in Northern Italy and Rome before returning to Siena, where he was much influenced by the work of Federico Barocci (1535-1612).
