The Bassano family of artists came from the town of Bassano del Grappa near Venice.
Jacopo dal Ponte (c.1510-1592), who trained with his father, assumed the name Bassano after his place of birth.
He had four sons, all of whom were also successful artists, painting religious, nocturnal and genre scenes and landscapes in a very similar style, which was popular in Venice.
A version of this painting by Leandro Bassano is in Vienna.
