The Front for the intended Stable at Burghley, by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (c. 1716-1783).

Pen and grey ink and pink and grey washes, 29cm by 50cm. Signed l.r: Lt: Brown.

As part of the many and varied works carried out by Lancelot Brown for Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), new stable blocks were built.

The plan shows the central block, one of three, and suggests alternative shapes for the central door; the higher one of which was eventually used.
