Venus and Vulcan are seen reclining to the left, watching as a number of cupids practise archery, whilst to the right others work the forge, 325.5cm high by 814.5cm wide.
The tapestry carries the weaver’s mark: John Vanderbanc fecit in Great Queen Street.
The Parisian-born Vanderbank was a Huguenot who moved first of all to Holland, before settling in London. He became established at Great Queen Street where he was recognised as the leading tapestry manufacturer of the late 17th Century.
