On the reverse of the painting, written in the distinctive hand of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) is: ‘sketch for an altarpiece in the church of St. Roet at Paris by Sebastiano Ricci.’

Jean Baptiste de Champaigne was a Flemish Baroque painter, who from 1671 was a teacher at the prestigious Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris.
