Oval, on ivory in a silver-gilt frame and blue leather case, 6.7cm. Signed and dated 1899.
The miniature was painted the year after the young Marquess inherited the title, following the early death of his father.
His tenure, which encompassed the whole of the first half of the 20th Century, was a long and successful one.
He guided the Burghley Estate through difficult times, including two World Wars, in the first of which he fought, and a declining agricultural economy.
