A Study of a young Woman, by the Hon. Miss Finch, after Guercino (1591-1666).

Pencil, 26cm by 19.7cm. Signed with monogram and dated 1793.

A later addition to the Burghley Inventory of 1763 records: ‘Breakfast room … a drawing by Miss Finch, sister to the Earl of Winchelsea done 1793.’

The young woman, with her turban, is reminiscent of the sibyls drawn and painted by the Baroque artist and draughtsman, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino.
