The Burghley painting records the original background that has now been lost through damage and over-painting in the Florentine original.
Del Sarto was known as an outstanding painter of frescoes and altarpieces; his work highly regarded by his contemporaries.
However, his fame would eventually be eclipsed by their’s; notably that of Leonardo (1452-1519), Michaelangelo (1475-1564) and Raphael (1483-1520).
