Sophia, the daughter of George Aufrere, married Charles Anderson-Pelham, 1st Baron Yarborough in 1770.
A later addition to the 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘pictures in dressing room….Miss Pelham wife of the first L’d Yarborough by Romney.’
George Romney was one of the most fashionable artists of his day.
He painted the portraits of many of the leading society figures, including Emma, Lady Hamilton, the wife of Sir William Hamilton, British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples.
Emma was also the mistress of Horatio, Lord Nelson and George Romney’s muse.
