A Miniature of Sir Thomas Whichcote Bt., (1813-1892), by Sir William Charles Ross, R.A. (1794-1860).

Oval, on ivory, in a gilt-metal frame and associated leather case, 4.9cm. Circa 1845.

Sir Thomas Whichcote, 7th Bt. was the father of Isabella Whichcote (1857-1917), who in 1875 married Brownlow, Lord Burghley, the future 4th Marquess of Exeter (1849-1898).

The artist, who was of Scottish descent, particularly favoured history painting, but ultimately concentrated on the more lucrative portrait and miniature painting, at which he excelled.

He received commissions from members of the Royal Family, as well as from several Continental Royal Houses.
