A Miniature of Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727), attributed to John Cross, circa 1700.

Oval, on vellum, in a gold frame with spiral cresting and wood reverse, 4.2cm. Signed with monogram JC.

Sir Isaac Newton was one of the greatest scientists England has ever produced.

He was born at Woolsthorpe Manor, some 30 miles north of Burghley.
