On card, rectangular, in a gilt-metal frame, 6.4cm.
Engraved on the reverse ‘Raphael./ by Miss Sterne/ at Rome.
The miniature was previously listed as after a self portrait of Raphael, no doubt due to the engraving on the reverse.
In fact it is after a portrait by Raphael (1483-1520), of his great friend, Bindo Altoviti, a wealthy banker and great patron of the arts, who was born in Rome in 1491.
The portrait, completed in about 1515, is in the National Gallery of Art of Washington D.C.
