Winterhalter was born in the Black Forest area of Germany.
The son of peasant stock, his remarkable artistic abilities ensured that he became famous throughout Europe for his sumptuous portraits of royalty and members of the aristocracy.
He painted over one hundred portraits for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and this copy was presented by them to Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter and his wife Isabella after their extremely successful three day Royal Visit in 1844.
