Queen Victoria, After Franz Xavier Winterhalter (1805-1873).

Oil on canvas, approximately 127cm by 101cm.

Winterhalter was born in the Black Forest area of Germany. The son of peasant stock, his remarkable artistic abilities ensured that he became famous throughout Europe for his sumptuous portraits of royalty and members of the aristocracy. He painted over one hundred portraits for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and this copy was presented by them to the 2nd Marquess of Exeter and his wife after the extremely successful Royal Visit of 1844.
