Oval, on vellum, in a rectangular dark-stained fruitwood veneer frame, 6.8cm.
This is one of several miniatures of Henrietta Maria painted by Hoskins. The deep blue background employed here was more usual in the late 16th Century.
The miniature was part of an immense bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689), to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703).
It appears in the 1690 Devonshire Schedule or Deed of Gift, an inventory recording the bequest: ‘A picture of the Queen to King Charles the ffirst by Hosk(ins) in white.’
