Prize Cattle in the Grounds of Burghley, signed W.R. Woods/1874.

Members of the prize-winning dairy shorthorn herd bred by William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895) are shown in the Park.

In the distance, beyond the lake, can be seen a view of the south west front of Burghley.

In the foreground to the right, the marquess is shown in conversation with his farm manager, Mr. Walton, whilst to the left, his stockman, John Hill, is seen leading the famous bull Telemachus, to join the group.

The painting is in a carved giltwood Florentine-style frame.
