In a carved and gilded Florentine-style frame.

The painting shows William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895) sitting on a log in the park, in conversation with his farm manager, Mr. Walton.

Grouped nearby are members of his prize-winning dairy shorthorn herd, including the famous bull Telemachus, led by the Marquess’s stockman, John Hill.

Very fine detailed gouache sketches for this painting were found comparatively recently at Burghley, PIC971.
