A Portrait of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, English School, late 16th Century.

Lord Burghley (1520-1598), is shown holding his staff of office as Lord High Treasurer and wearing his Garter chain.

It is said that, of the many honours he received from Queen Elizabeth I, whom he served so faithfully and for so long, his Knighthood of the Garter meant most to him.
