The 5th Marquess (1876-1956) is shown dressed for hunting, with a view of the south-west front of Burghley in the background.
He inherited the title in 1898, on the untimely death of his father, and guided Burghley and its Estate with great skill and dedication throughout the first half of the 20th Century.
This was a difficult period which encompassed two World Wars and a declining agricultural economy.
