The Hon. Edward Cecil, whose birthdate is unknown, was the fourth son of John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700).

He fought in Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and died during, or just after, the Siege of Barcelona in 1706.

The German-born Kneller was the leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th Centuries.

He was court painter to monarchs from Charles II to George I, who knighted him.
