A Portrait of Sir Christopher Whichcote Bt., Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (1727-1788).

Oil on canvas, 127cm by 100.3cm. Inscribed l.l. with the identity of the sitter and dated 1775.

The portrait, together with that of Sir Christopher’s wife, Jane, (PIC130) was inherited by Isabella, the only child of Sir Thomas Whichcote, 7th Bt. of Aswarby Park, Lincolnshire who was the wife of Brownlow, 4th Marquess of Exeter (1849-1898).

Gainsborough was a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768 and one of the greatest and most successful portrait painters of the 18th Century.
