Portrait of Sir Christopher Whichcote Bt., Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (1727-1788).

Oil on canvas, 127cm by 100.3cm. Inscribed l.l. with the identity of the sitter and dated 1775.

Gainsborough was a founder member of the Royal Academy and one of the greatest and most successful portrait painters of the 18th Century.

The portrait, together with that of Sir Christopher’s wife, Jane, (PIC130) was inherited by the only child of Sir Thomas Whichcote, 7th Bt. of Aswarby Park, Lincolnshire who was the wife of the 4th Marquess of Exeter.
