A Portrait of Myra, Marchioness of Exeter, by Shirley Charles Llewellyn Slocombe (1872-1935).

Oil on canvas, 74.9cm by 62.2cm. Signed l.r.: Shirley Slocombe 1901.

The Hon. Myra Orde-Powlett (1879-1973) was the wife of William, 5th Marquess of Exeter (1876-1956).

The portrait was painted in the year of their marriage and exhibited at the Royal Academy the same year; the marchioness noting that it was a wedding present from the artist.

He also painted a portrait of the 5th Marquess which is dated 1907. (PIC235)

Shirley Charles Llewellyn Slocombe was born in London.

He studied at the Highbury Institute and School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools from 1892-1897, where he won the Landseer Scholarship in 1894.
