A Portrait of Mrs. Jane Cecil, (c.1501-1587) Anglo-Dutch School, late 16th Century.

Oil on panel, 48.3cm by 33cm.

Jane Cecil was the daughter and heiress of William Heckington of Bourne and the wife of Richard Cecil (died 1553).

Their only son William (1520-1598), became chief adviser to Queen Elizabeth I and the leading statesman of the first Elizabethan age.  
He was created Lord Burghley in 1571 and became Lord High Treasurer the following year.
