A Portrait of The Hon. Bridget Noel, by Willem Wissing (1656-1687).

Oil on canvas, 125.7cm by 128.8cm.

The Hon. Bridget Noel (died 1729), was the daughter of the 3rd Viscount Campden and Elizabeth Bertie of Exton Hall, Rutland.

The Noels, Berties and Cecils were close friends; Bridget being mentioned in the will of John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700) as a ‘noble friend’ to whom he left a bequest.

Willem Wissing arrived in England from Holland in 1676 to study under Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680).

He was an immensely talented artist whose exceptionally promising career was cut short when he died aged only thirty-one, whilst painting at Burghley.
