Oil on canvas, with extensions. 120.7cm by 185.4cm.
The portrait depicts three of the children of John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700), portrayed full length, with a hound, in a landscape setting.
The format is similar to that adopted by the artist’s father, Jacob d’Agar, when he painted John, Lord Burghley (later 5th Earl), with two of his siblings, as children, see PIC389.
Charles d’Agar was a French portrait painter, the son of Jacques, or Jacob d’Agar (1640-1715), with whom he arrived in England in about 1682. The son spent most of his working life in England.
