A Portrait of John, 7th Earl of Exeter (1700-1722), when a boy, Circle of Jonathan Richardson (1665-1745).

John succeeded his father as 7th Earl in 1721 and survived for only a year after inheriting his title.

He was succeeded by his younger brother Brownlow, as the 8th Earl of Exeter (1701-1754).

Jonathan Richardson was a noted portrait painter who is said to have influenced the works of both William Hogarth (1697-1764) and Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792).

He is also known to have formed one of the most important collections of Old Master paintings of his time.
