A Portrait of Isabella Poyntz, Marchioness of Exeter, by Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A. (1769-1830) and Sir Martin Archer Shee, P.R.A. (1769-1850).

Oil on canvas, 141cm by 111.8cm. Inscribed l.l. with the identity of the sitter.

Isabella Poyntz (1803-1879), was the daughter and heiress of William Stephen Poyntz of Cowdray.

In 1824 she married Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867).

Sir Thomas Lawrence, an almost entirely self-taught child prodigy, became the leading portrait painter of the early 19th Century.

The Prince Regent became his patron and many of his finest portraits are in the Royal Collections.

Sir Martin Archer Shee was a fine portrait painter, though  somewhat eclipsed by Lawrence, whom he replaced as President of the Royal Academy on the former’s death in 1830.
