Portrait of Frances Manners, Countess of Exeter, Attributed to Jacob Huysmans (1630-1696).

Lady Frances Manners was the daughter of John, 8th Earl of Rutland and Lady Frances Montagu. She was the first wife of John, 4th Earl of Exeter and the mother of John, the 5th Earl, often referred to as The Travelling Earl.

Jacob Huysmans trained in his native Antwerp, before emigrating to England, some time before the Restoration. He became popular as a portrait painter, and eventually, court painter, enjoying the patronage of Charles II’s wife, Queen Catherine, for whom he painted several portraits.
