A Portrait of Lady Frances Manners, Countess of Exeter, attributed to Jacob Huysmans (1630-1696).

Oil on canvas, 119.4cm by 92.7cm.

Lady Frances Manners (1630-c1663), was the daughter of John, 8th Earl of Rutland and Lady Frances Montagu.

She was the first wife of John, 4th Earl of Exeter (1628-1678), and the mother of John, the 5th Earl (1648-1700), often referred to as The Travelling Earl.

Jacob Huysmans trained in his native Antwerp, before emigrating to England some time before the Restoration of 1660.

He became popular as a portrait painter and enjoyed the patronage of Charles II’s wife, Catherine of Braganza, a fellow Catholic, for whom he painted several portraits.
