Lord Burghley (1905-1981) is shown seated and wearing the uniform of the Grenadier Guards.

He became 6th Marquess of Exeter on the death of his father in 1956.

The artist specialised in portraits, as well as large canvases of historical and ceremonial events.

He became one of the most sought after society artists of his day and was successful on both sides of the Atlantic.
